Man charged after starting Soldiers Beach fire

A man will appear in court tomorrow after allegedly lighting a fire on the  Central Coast today, despite a total fire ban in place due to weather conditions.

Police will allege about 4.45pm (Sunday 13 November 2016), the 55-year-old man was walking his dog around a car park at Soldiers Beach (about 13km north of The Entrance), when he was seen to deliberately light a fire in scrub nearby.

Fire & Rescue NSW officers attended and extinguished the blaze a short time later. Minimal damage was caused to grass in the area.

Surf Life Savers apprehended the man and officers from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command were called.

The man was arrested and a search resulted in police locating matches on him. The man was taken to Tuggerah Lakes Police Station where he was charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless to its spread, and cause or set fire to the property of another.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court tomorrow (Monday 14 November 2016).
